Rucking is the closest thing to the trip itself
Most trip preparation advice sends you to a gym, and gym work does help. But there's a reason rucking has become the standard recommendation for hikers and backpackers: it's the only form of training that's the same movement, under the same kind of load, for the same duration.
Backpacking asks you to carry weight, over uneven ground, uphill and downhill, for hours, on consecutive days. Rucking rehearses four of those five things without leaving your neighborhood. Nothing else on a normal training schedule gets that close.
The gap between a trip that's a pleasure and one you endure is usually not fitness in the abstract. It's whether your shoulders, feet, and knees have done this before.
Match the weight you're actually going to carry
The first question isn't "how heavy should I train?" It's "what will my pack weigh on day one?"
Weigh your loaded pack, or estimate it honestly, and let that number set your training load. Base weight plus food, plus water, plus the layers you'll actually bring. People routinely underestimate this by five or ten pounds, and it's better to discover that at home.
Then work up to it gradually. If your trip pack will be 30 pounds and you've never carried anything, don't start at 30. Build toward it over weeks so it's familiar rather than novel by the time you're at the trailhead.
There's a case for occasionally training a little heavier than your trip weight, and it's a reasonable one: it makes the real thing feel manageable. Just remember that extra load lands on your joints on every step, so treat it as an occasional session rather than the default. For most people, training at trip weight and putting the extra effort into elevation pays back more.
Break in the actual gear, not similar gear

Train the elevation, because that's what breaks people
Flat miles build a base. They do not prepare you for a mountain.
Sustained climbing under load is a distinct demand, and it's the one that most often turns a planned day into a shortened one. If your trip involves 3,000 feet of gain in a day, training that has to appear in your rucks somewhere. Local options are usually better than people assume: a parking garage ramp, a stadium stairwell, a single steep hill walked as repeats, a treadmill at incline.
Work backward from the trip. If a day involves 2,500 feet of gain across 8 miles, your longest training rucks should be building toward something in that neighborhood, even if you have to accumulate the gain on a much shorter loop.

Do not skip the downhill
Descending under load is the most underprepared part of most trips, and it's why so many people finish a hike with sore quads and unhappy knees rather than tired lungs.
Going down loads your quadriceps eccentrically, meaning they're lengthening while resisting, and that's the contraction most associated with delayed muscle soreness. A pack makes it worse, because you're braking more mass on every step. Uphill fitness does not transfer to it.
So build descents into your training deliberately. If you're doing hill repeats, walk down rather than taking a shortcut. Practice shortening your stride and keeping your knees soft. If you'll use trekking poles on the trip, use them in training, because they take a real share of the load off your knees on descent and they take some practice to use naturally.

Train consecutive days before a multi-day trip
A backpacking trip doesn't give you a rest day. If your training is one hard ruck a week with six days to recover, you've prepared for a day hike, not a traverse.
Six to eight weeks out, start pairing sessions: a longer loaded ruck on Saturday, a shorter one on Sunday. It doesn't need to be heroic. What you're learning is how your feet, shoulders, and legs feel starting a second day already tired, which is information you'd much rather have now.
This is also when blister patterns show up. Feet that are fine for one day and destroyed on the second are extremely common, and entirely fixable with sock changes, foot care, or different footwear, if you find out in advance.
A rough timeline
Eight to twelve weeks is a comfortable runway for a demanding trip. A workable shape:
- Weeks 1 to 3. Two or three rucks a week at a light load, building to 3 or 4 miles. Establish the habit and let your feet adapt.
- Weeks 4 to 6. Increase to something near trip weight. Introduce deliberate hill work. Extend the longest session gradually. See how far should you ruck for progression pacing.
- Weeks 7 to 9. Longest sessions approach the trip's daily distance and gain, at trip weight. Add a back-to-back weekend. Wear the exact gear.
- Week 10. Taper. Cut volume substantially, keep one or two short easy rucks, and arrive rested rather than freshly fatigued.
Shorter runways still work. If you have four weeks, prioritize elevation under trip weight and breaking in your footwear, and accept a more modest trip. If your timeline is tight, the honest move is to adjust the itinerary rather than compress the training.
What rucking won't cover
Worth being straight about the limits. Rucking doesn't prepare you for altitude, which needs acclimatization time rather than fitness. It doesn't teach navigation, river crossings, or scrambling. It doesn't fully replicate rough trail footing, since most people's training routes are considerably smoother than a rocky ridgeline, so get onto real trails when you can.
It also isn't a substitute for strength work if you're coming from a low base. Some basic lower body and core strength makes the loaded miles safer and more comfortable.

Will rucking help with downhill hiking?
