Why Your Apple Watch Undercounts Rucking Calories
Apple Watch has no field for pack weight, so ruck calorie estimates tend to run low. Here's what the watch actually measures, why load slips past it, and how to get a more useful number.

The watch is measuring you, not your pack
If you've finished a hard ruck and watched your Apple Watch report roughly what an easy walk would have, you're not imagining it. The number isn't broken. It's answering a slightly different question than the one you're asking.
Apple Watch estimates active energy from motion and heart rate, scaled by the personal details in the Health app: age, sex, height, and body weight. During an Outdoor Walk it combines accelerometer, altimeter, and GPS data with your heart rate to work out how hard you're moving. That's a genuinely good system for walking, running, and most of what people do in a day.
There is no field anywhere in that chain for the twenty pounds on your back. Health knows what you weigh. It has no way to know what you're carrying.
Load is not completely invisible, but it is underweighted
It would be too simple to say the watch ignores your pack entirely. Carrying weight raises your heart rate at any given speed, and the watch uses heart rate during workouts, so part of the extra cost does show up in the estimate.
The problem is the other part. Load carriage has a mechanical cost that scales with the total mass being moved, the speed you move it, the grade you move it up, and the surface under your feet. Published load-carriage research, including the Pandolf equation used by militaries to plan marches, models energy cost from body weight and external load together. The watch models it from body weight alone.
So the estimate drifts low, and it drifts further as conditions get harder. A light pack on flat pavement at an easy pace is close enough that the gap barely matters. Thirty-five pounds on a steep gravel climb is a different story, because that's exactly where the load term in the equation is doing the most work.
Beware of precise-sounding claims
You'll see confident figures online, often something like "trackers underestimate rucking by 40 to 50 percent." Those numbers usually come from marketing pages rather than published measurement, and the real gap depends on your load, pace, grade, and terrain. Treat any single percentage as a rough illustration, not a specification.

The cleanest fix is to stop asking the watch for a number it can't produce, and calculate one from the variables that actually drive the cost: your body weight, your pack weight, your pace, and your terrain.

The body weight workaround, and why it costs you
A common suggestion is to add your pack weight to your body weight in the Health app before a ruck, then change it back afterward. It does nudge the estimate upward, and it's worth understanding why it's a poor trade.
Health uses your body weight for more than one workout. It feeds resting energy, which feeds your Move ring and your daily totals whether you're rucking or sitting at a desk. It also affects every other workout you record that day. And you have to remember to reverse it, every time, or your weight history quietly fills with numbers that were never real.
You'd be trading a known undercount on one workout for an unknown overcount across everything else, plus a weight log you can no longer trust. If you're tracking body composition at all, that's an expensive fix for a modest gain.

Consistency beats precision here
Worth saying plainly: no consumer method gives you a true calorie count. Lab measurement of energy expenditure requires equipment you're not going to wear on a Tuesday evening walk. Every number you see, from the watch, from a calculator, from any app, is a model.
That's less of a problem than it sounds, because the useful question is rarely "exactly how many calories was that?" It's "was this session harder than the last one, and by roughly how much?" A model that includes your pack weight answers that well. A model that leaves it out will keep telling you a heavy hill day and an easy flat day were about the same, which is the one comparison you most need it to get right.
Pick one method, use it for every ruck, and pay attention to the trend rather than any single figure.
