What goes into it

The four things that move the number

Change any one and watch the estimate respond. These are the same drivers that decide where you land in the 300 to 550 calorie-per-hour range.

Body weight

The biggest driver. Moving your own mass is most of the work, so a heavier person burns more on the same route with the same pack.

Pack weight

The load you carry. On flat ground it adds less than most people expect; on hills and at faster paces it starts to matter much more.

Pace

The energy cost of walking rises steeply as you speed up. A brisk ruck burns meaningfully more per minute than an easy one.

Terrain

Hills are the multiplier people underestimate. Rolling and hilly options approximate an average uphill grade rather than a specific route.

From watts to calories

calories per minute = M × 60 ÷ 4184
total calories = calories per minute × minutes

The tool converts your inputs first: pounds × 0.4536 for kilograms, and miles per hour × 0.44704 for meters per second. The terrain presets set the grade and factor, with flat pavement at grade 0 and η 1.0, rolling trail at grade 2 and η 1.1, and hilly trail at grade 5 and η 1.1.

The equation has a real limit worth knowing: it treats the load as a single mass on your torso, so it doesn’t separate a backpack from a vest or a hip carry, and it runs a little high at very heavy loads. How many calories does rucking burn per hour?
For many people, rucking burns roughly 300 to 550 calories per hour. Where you land depends on your body weight, pack weight, pace, and terrain. A lighter person on a flat, easy loop sits near the bottom; a heavier person moving briskly up hills with a loaded pack sits at the top.
How is rucking calorie burn calculated?
This calculator uses the Pandolf load-carriage equation, a formula developed by military researchers to estimate the energy cost of walking with a pack. It combines your body weight, the load, your walking speed, and the grade of the terrain into an estimated metabolic rate, then converts that to calories over your chosen duration.
Is the rucking calorie calculator accurate?
It is a planning estimate, not a lab measurement. The Pandolf equation responds to the things that actually change the number, but no formula sees your exact pack fit, wind, heat, fitness, or the precise shape of a route. Treat trends across your own sessions as more meaningful than any single figure.
Does it matter whether I carry the weight in a backpack, vest, or hip belt?
For the calorie estimate, not much. The Pandolf equation treats your load as a single weight on your torso, so a backpack, a weight vest, and a hip carry all produce the same number, and the real difference between those torso carries is small next to how much you carry, how fast, and how steep the route is. Stability matters more than the system, since a load that bounces or pulls you off balance costs more than a snug one. In the Ruckly app, carry type does feed into your Ruck Score, because the same weight doesn't feel the same on your shoulders as on your hips.
Does rucking burn more calories than walking?
Yes, but by less than most claims suggest on easy terrain. For a 180-pound rucker at 3 mph on flat pavement, a 20-pound pack raises the burn from about 295 to roughly 318 calories per hour, around 8 percent more. Add pace and hills and the load matters much more.
Why doesn't my watch count the pack weight?
A watch estimates calories from your body weight, heart rate, and movement. It has no idea there is weight on your back, so most trackers score a loaded ruck like an unloaded walk. Logging pack weight next to the session is what gives a hard ruck its explanation.
