What goes into it
The four things that move the number
Change any one and watch the estimate respond. These are the same drivers that decide where you land in the 300 to 550 calorie-per-hour range.
Body weight
The biggest driver. Moving your own mass is most of the work, so a heavier person burns more on the same route with the same pack.
Pack weight
The load you carry. On flat ground it adds less than most people expect; on hills and at faster paces it starts to matter much more.
Pace
The energy cost of walking rises steeply as you speed up. A brisk ruck burns meaningfully more per minute than an easy one.
Terrain
Hills are the multiplier people underestimate. Rolling and hilly options approximate an average uphill grade rather than a specific route.

The calculator uses the Pandolf load-carriage equation to estimate your metabolic rate in watts, then converts that to calories over your session.

From watts to calories
calories per minute = M × 60 ÷ 4184
total calories = calories per minute × minutes
The tool converts your inputs first: pounds × 0.4536 for kilograms, and miles per hour × 0.44704 for meters per second. The terrain presets set the grade and factor, with flat pavement at grade 0 and η 1.0, rolling trail at grade 2 and η 1.1, and hilly trail at grade 5 and η 1.1.
The equation has a real limit worth knowing: it treats the load as a single mass on your torso, so it doesn’t separate a backpack from a vest or a hip carry, and it runs a little high at very heavy loads.
